Congratulations Ed what an accomplishment! That's outstanding to build this enormous database (11 trillion positions?) on home pc's in under a year.  Here's the link so you can read it from Ed Gilbert's website page:   http://pages.prodigy.net/eyg/Checkers/10-pieceBuild.htm

Thank you Murray. The fun part for me was the challenge of building it with the constraints of a hobbyist's budget.

Congratulations on this Ed. If you need help with future computer processing, I might be able to assist you. There is a supercomputer center located on campus which is available for access to students for research. I was given a tour of this building last semester when we had our computer science midsouth conference; it was impressive. Being involved with such research would be a new experience for me, so I am willing to contribute in ways that I can. You are able to contact me via http://draughts.info

Ed, hot congratulations on such a performance ! Few questions:

1) Do you plan to revise opening book based on new database ?

2) Do you plan somehow to make it available on website, allow users to set position 5x5 and get an answer "W/D/L" ?

3) Looking forward, do you plan some day start working on 6x5 database ?

Respectfully,

A. Moiseyev

Matthew, thanks for that offer. Probably they would not want to tie up such a valuable resource for months just to build checkers databases, but in any case I have no plans to go beyond 10 pieces right now.

> 1) Do you plan to revise opening book based on new database ?

I will probably do some book building with the new db, but I suspect that you might find the book I will build to be less useful than the one you have now. I say that because the book generator will see 10-piece draws that kingsrow may not properly know how to play with only the 8-piece db, so when you get to the end of the book moves in these cases your 8-piece kingsrow might not be able to show you the correct continuation. It may find 'database draw' scores very early in many lines and stop generating book moves where the 8-piece book will show a lot more play.

No, my ISP will not allow me to run a web server on my DSL connection. I will answer emails though, as I always do. I think Schaeffer is planning some kind of web access to his db, but I don't know when.

Murray, I'm sure you remember that 16-20 Gemini defense that we played out informally at LV. (10-14 22-17 11-16 17-10 6-15 23-18 15-22 25-18 16-20). You were convinced it was a draw, I was doubtful and saw at least a difficult defense. I later expanded this line with the book generator and decided that you were probably right. For fun I looked at this with the 10pc db and it is much easier to see that this is a draw now.

Alex, I know you like puzzles, so I'll throw this out for you or anyone else that is interested. As an experiment I opened Borland's Bridges to a random page that has 10-piece diagrams on it. This first page I looked at (page 88, diagrams 127 through 132) has 2 wrong results in the 6 diagrams. The next page also has 2 wrong results in its 6 diagrams. Can you spot any of the positions with the wrong result? I know I can't! I haven't tried these with an 8pc program, probably at least some of these can be found with one.
